Nellie McClung was a Canadian feminist, politician, and social activist. She was part of the social and moral reform movements prevalent in Western Canada in the early 1900s. McClung was an effective speaker known for her sense of humor. She championed the causes of temperance and suffrage. She saw World War 1 as beneficial to suffrage in that women were joining the work force and changing the image of women. The Pearlie Watson trilogy consists of Sowing Seeds in Danny, The Second Chance, and Purple Springs. The stories follow a reform minded girl from a poor life in Millford to her teen years on a farm and finally to her life as a suffrage and temperance reformer. Set in the Prairies in the very early 1900's, the story centers on the very capable daughter, Pearl, of a poor family. With a sense of Christian honor and openness, she changes the attitudes of people she meets, including a harsh landlord and his wife. All the while she strives to be a role model for her younger brother Danny.
